Community projects and new friends for Valea Viilor

Big plans are brewing in the commune of
Valea Viilor, Sibiu County: new headquarters for the City Hall, capitalising
the tourist potential of the
church, a protected UNESCO monument, or finding new friends and partners
in Germany. It’s all on the agenda of the Local Council, which starts 2010 with
plenty of work to do.

The mayor of Valea Viilor proposed moving the headquarters of the City Hall in the
former Post Office, during the Local Council meeting in December 2009. However,
that building now belongs to the Evangelic District Office.
“All local councillors agreed to have a new City Hall, because the building we currently
use is quite old and blocks the
Evangelical fortified Church, which belongs to the UNESCO World Cultural
Patrimony. Along with the move, we can capitalize that monument much better”, Avram
Pinte, mayor of Valea Viilor, says.
“We have identified a building that might serve as the future headquarters and we
are trying to convince representatives of the
Evangelical District Office to offer us the building, where the former Post
Office was located. It has a big yard and adequately-sized rooms, creating good
conditions for the local administration”, the mayor explains.
Water infrastructure in the works
Another line on the Local Council’s Agenda is continuing to connect the commune
to the public utility lines. For almost an year now, works have been under way to
build the water supply pipes and the waterborne waste disposal system. The settlement
is included in the project “Area system for water supply and waterborne waste disposal
in the city of Copşa Mică and neighbouring localities Axente Sever, Târnava and
Valea Viilor". The investment amounts to 30.4 million lei, money that came from
the European Union and the Romanian Government. Employees of the Italian company
that builds the system have managed to finish about a quarter of the project in
Valea Viilor. The deadline is 2011.
Twinning with a German City
Until then, city officials have started twinning procedures with
Aabergen, a German community. The first steps have already been taken; the
mayor and priest form Aabergen have visited Valea Viilor at the end of 2009.
The priest in the German village is originally from Valea Viilor, which makes collaborating
much easier. “The mayor and priest have visited and we’ve talked about possibilities
of partnering in the future. We’ll see the best ways to accomplish this, so we can
succeed in twinning the two communes”, Avram Pinte said.
This year, officials from Valea Viilor will go to Germany. “We have already talked
about this and we’ll return their visit. This way, our relationship will grow stronger
and we’ll have a better idea about the future projects we might begin together”,
Valea Viilor’s mayor says.
So far, German officials announced they will offer an intervention vehicle for the
local emergency service. It’s a fire truck that will soon arrive in Valea Viilor.
